Fine art at the Russian Museum

The very first state museum of fine arts in the country, The Russian Museum, is a perfect attraction for those wanting to experience some magnificent Russian works. Their collections hold over 400,000 exhibits with pieces from all forms and genres of art.

The many faces of creativity
When in search of fine Russian art, this museum has an incredible collection spaced out over a number of venues. You can find the main building in the center of the city at The Mikhailovsky Palace in the Benois Wing. Here there is the most famous artists on display such as Andrei Rublev, Dionisius, Vladimir Borovikovsky, Alexander Ivanov and many more.

Another of the main exhibition buildings is the Stroganov Palace. Once home to one of the country’s most famous families, the Stroganovs, this palace has now been partly restored to give you a glimpse of what it was like to live in 18th century Russia. Inside you can discover pieces of decorative and applied art.

Want to see collections from foreign artists in Russia cased inside incredible neoclassical architecture? Head to The Marble Palace. This beautiful building holds the work from artists and sculptors who influenced Russian art in the 18th and 19th centuries.

St. Michael’s Castle also forms a part of the Russian Museum. Once home to Emperor Paul I, it is the only palace in the country built in romantic classicism style. Within its doors are exhibitions that display the ideas and dreams of Tsar Paul.
