Responsible Business

Taking responsibility for the environment and local community has been an important part of the broader commitment of the Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group to sustainable development for many years. In 2001, this commitment was fortified and placed within the scope of a programme called Responsible Business (RB). Each hotel has a unique RB Action Plan covering areas such as community outreach, environmental improvement, employee well-being, and health and safety.

The hotels are engaged with both local charity groups and the Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group corporate international charity organisation, the World Childhood Foundation. The mission of the foundation is to defend the rights of the child and to promote better living conditions for vulnerable and exploited children at risk all over the world.

Think Planet
Taking the work with Responsible Business one step farther, Rezidor has launched a group-wide energy-saving initiative: The ambitious and proactive programme Think Planet targets an energy consumption reduction of 25% by the year 2016 in all Rezidor hotels across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

In hotel operations, Think Planet focuses on creating smart energy habits, such as switching off lights and equipment, turning heating and cooling to eco-mode, and reporting energy-related issues that require attention and preventive maintenance. The basic Think Planet tools are simple and low-cost solutions, including daylight and motion sensors for lighting, condensation water recuperation from air conditioning and alarms on freezers. Considerable investments are made to completely move to energy-efficient lighting in all hotels, install variable extraction systems in the kitchens, and optimise building management systems and heating, ventilation and air conditioner installations.

RB accomplishments include:

  • Training all employees in Living Responsible Business
  • Training all hotel management in Leading Responsible Business
  • Donated winter clothes, pillows and quilts to the local charity Stadsmissionen
  • Co-arranged a flea market with sister hotels in Stockholm to raise money for the World Childhood Foundation
  • Co-arranged the movie premiere of the documentary Not My Life, a film about human trafficking, with proceeds going to the World Childhood Foundation
  • Raised and donated money from the staff and guests to the Red Cross hurricane relief efforts in the Philippines
  • Regularly donating unclaimed (lost and found) items to local charities
  • Selling World Childhood Foundation bracelets at the front desk to aid the foundation's work for children to have a safe and happy childhood
  • Working on environmental issues
  • Working in cooperation with local authorities to improve our recycling programme
