The iconic Ivan Vazov National Theatre
The neoclassical Ivan Vazov National Theatre is located in central Sofia. It is a cultural institution, not only for the capital city but the whole nation. The theatre was commissioned in the early 20th century and is the oldest and most impressive in the country.
The beautiful facade of the theatre is an attraction in its own right. Like many others, you’ll be keen to get a snapshot of the contrasting white columns and details against the red background. The highlight is the gold-plated ornate details on the apex of the roof. In the foreground, you will find a lovely fountain with a dancing ballerina and City Garden, a popular place for relaxing, enjoying some shade in the trees or sipping a warming cup of coffee.
Inside, the theatre offers performances on three stages. The main stage seats 780 guests, while the chamber hall seats 135 and the smaller stage offers intimate performances for around 80 people. The mail hall is traditional with more gold-plated ornate decoration around the balconies. The troupe that performs at this magnificent concert venue is carefully selected from Bulgaria’s best actors, singers and dancers ensuring high quality performances.
So, who is Ivan Vazov? He was a Bulgarian author of poems, plays short stories and novels. His inspiration was drawn from the history of events in the country, his love for the beauty and his patriotism for Bulgaria.
Although, not many of the productions that take place at the theatre are in English, it is still worth seeing a show for the experience. If you know when you are visiting it is worth contacting the National Theatre or the Opera House
to check what performances are on. Enjoy an evening out at the theatre and let Park Inn by Radisson Sofia
take care of the rest.
