Hellabrunn Zoo

On the banks of the river Isar lies Hellabrunn Zoo, also known as Munich Zoo. Here more than 18,000 animals from 700 species find their home in a majority of cage-less enclosures. With impressive natural surroundings, this is a unique, unspoilt environment and is the perfect place to spend your day, especially if you’re travelling with kids.

Compared to many zoo’s in the world, the entrance fees to Hellabrunn are quite cheap. The exhibits are amazing and there is also a playground and pony ride for the children to enjoy. If you need a break while visiting the zoo you can head on over to the beer garden, located just next to the adventure playground.

Preparing for a fun-filled day

Spanning across a massive 36,000-hectares, Munich Zoo is one of the largest in Germany and is no ordinary zoo. Hellabrunn was the first zoological garden in the world to group animals together by their natural habitats, rather than according to their species. This geo-zoo concept allows you to see animals up-close and in their usual surroundings, allowing for an experience more reminiscent of viewing animals in the wild rather than in a zoo.

Nature lovers can also rejoice at the sight of impressive colourful coral reef aquariums, huge aviaries covering 5,000 square metres, an impressive elephant enclosure and a jungle tent for lions. A visit to Hellabrunn is truly a treat for all ages.

Preserving the rare species

Hellabrunn was ranked as the 4th best zoo in Europe. Apart from serving as a large attraction in the city, Munich Zoo also focuses on conservation and captive breeding of rare species, such as the drill and silvery gibbons. Animals like gorillas, giraffes, elephants and Arctic foxes have also been successfully bred here. This conservation effort makes Hellabrunn a must-see for animal lovers visiting the city.

This spectacular attraction is a mere 25 minute drive away from our Park Inn by Radisson Munich East Hotel. If you don’t have a car available ask our staff and they will gladly assist you with directions using public transport. After you’ve spent the day taking in the sights of these beautiful animals you can return to your stylish home away from home and relax, with the city centre easily accessible.
