Step into Tallinn Old Town

Tallinn is a very old city and has plenty to show for it. The old town is a wonderfully preserved piece of history dating back to the 13th century that you absolutely must see when visiting. Walk through quaint cobblestone streets, explore an ancient pharmacy and take snaps of timeless buildings and castles.

Attractions from the past

If you have the chance to spend some time in the old town, then there are a number of cool sights you should tick off your list. First stroll around the streets and enjoy awesome architecture. The main square has an impressive Gothic Town Hall building and one of the longest running pharmacies in the world. In July and August, the interior of the Town Hall is open as a museum for visitors and the pharmacy is open all year round. If you continue walking through the town, towards St. Catherine’s Church, you will eventually stumble upon another great attraction, St. Catherine’s Passage. This hidden walkway is a medieval treat, lined with workshops and stalls selling handcrafts made by traditional methods.

One of the most iconic sights in this part of the city is the Kiek in de Kök Tower. This cannon tower is perfect for pictures and has a great museum inside to teach you more about what life was like in historic Tallinn. Underneath the tower is a number of tunnels used in previous wars, known as the Bastion Passages. These are fascinating and worth going to see.

Also worth checking out are the Town Walls. The centuries old structures guarding the city are connected by huge walls that you can walk across to get a better view of the area and Toompea Castle.

Getting around the city

There are countless attractions in the old town, so if you are planning on spending a day or two seeing all it has to offer, then grab yourself a Tallinn Card. The card gives you free public transport and entrance into most of the best museums and sites, as well as discounts.
