in Leuven offers a unique glimpse into the city and region’s unique culture, showcasing an excellent selection of classical and contemporary art. The museum opened its doors in 2009 and features an impressive collection of around 46,000 works, ranging from Late Gothic painting and sculptures to local artists from the 16th and 19th century. There are also 19th century paintings and sculptures by various Flemish masters at the museum. If you’re an art lover then the M Museum is a must-see when visiting the Belgian city.
Walk through masterpieces
The Museum M is affectionately named simply “M” by the locals of Leuven, and features both temporary exhibitions and the M-collection. Their doors are open six days a week and closed on Wednesdays. When you visit you can either walk through the halls on your own or join a guided tour. Join a tour through their permanent collection of Late Gothic and 19th century works of art, where you’ll be introduced to the museum through the masterpieces it houses. At the same time you’ll find that the tour makes it clear that the term “masterpiece” is subjective, and your personal contribution is indispensable. There is also an audio guide available if you prefer to explore on your own.
A work of art in itself
The first edition of M Museum was found in Leuven City Hall until it was moved to a private residence, where it now resides. But the museum has undergone major renovations and the contemporary building has become an icon in the city. Designed by Belgian star-architect Stephane Beel, the design masterfully blends historical features and contemporary architecture. In addition to the many works of art and thought-provoking installations found within its halls, Museum M is a feast for the eyes from the outside as well. Stop by their rooftop café for great views of the city and relax in between enjoying the museum. Each summer the M-ID festival is held here, with music and entertainment available on the terrace.
