Discover the history of the grand Olimpiyskiy stadium in Kyiv

NSC Olimpiyskiy is one of Europe’s largest sports complexes, located within a 5-minute walk of Park Inn by Radisson Kyiv Troyitska.

The stadium’s intriguing history began in 1923, when the first competitions of Kyiv region Olympic Games took place at Trostky Red Stadium, as it was called back then. This event marked the beginning of mass sports development in the city.

The stadium has experienced several general reconstructions. In 1966, a second tier of stands was built. This increased the capacity from 50,000 to 100,062 people. A reporter complex with commentator cabins was added, as well as a springboard for ski jumping. The stadium was renovated for the third time in 1977 before the football tournament of the XXII Summer Olympic Games. This time, in addition to the technical re-equipment and preparation of the football field, four new 82-meter-high pillars with 132 lighting lamps were installed. During the 1980 Olympic Games, football matches of the teams of Algeria, Iraq, Spain, Costa Rica, the GDR, Syria and Finland were held at the stadium.

The most recent reconstruction of NSC Olimpiyskiy took place as part of the preparation to host the final part of the European Football Championship in Ukraine. Today the stadium houses 70,050 spectators, which makes it one of the largest sports arenas in Europe.

Since the opening of NSC Olimpiyskiy in 2011, more than 100 football matches have been played, including matches of UEFA Europa League and UEFA Champions League. The arena has also become a popular concert venue, hosting both Ukrainian and world-famous performers, including Okean Elzy, Madonna, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Depeche Mode.

The complex is actively used as a venue for events in Kyiv - large conferences, presentations, fashion shows and even weddings.

In 2014, NSC Olimpiyskiy opened an exhibition of professional boxing legends Vitaly and Vladimir Klichko with exclusive trophies and an incredible multimedia show.
