State Opera and Ballet Theatre

Ekaterinburg State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre, also known as Ural Opera, has been at the heart of the city’s cultural scene since 1912. However, its story began long before then, making it one of the oldest theatres in Russia. The history of this grand theatre dates back to the 19th century. The building is another beauty of the city’s skyline. Its grand exterior makes way for an even grander interior. The main auditorium is decorated with ornate golden fixtures and designs across the stage, ceilings, balconies and boxes. The troupes who perform here are among the best in the country and will put on an unforgettable show. The theatre also attracts visiting opera and ballet companies. The programme of performances cover well-known Russian and international operas and ballets. If you want to experience a cultural evening in Ekaterinburg, this is the perfect place to visit.

Kolyada Theatre

This artisan theatre is run by Playwright Nikolay Kolyada who has fought hard to secure it. Originally he starred in performances in other theatres but his dream was to own his own. In 2004, Nikolay secured a stage in the basement of the Local History Museum and in that time managed to gain interest in his shows from the media and audiences. With much persistence, he secured the current premises, a small wooden mansion with a sixty-seat auditorium. This theatre is charmingly decorated with quaint antique wooden furniture and colourful walls. To see a performance here is as much about the talent and vision of Nikolay as it is about the theatre and will give you a unique insight into the Russian art scene.

These two theatres offer a very different experience but if you want a cultural Russian evening to remember, then it is recommended to choose a performance that suits you at one of these venues. The central Park Inn by Radisson Ekaterinburg Hotel is located close to both theatres and is the ideal base for a night out.
