Bring the past to life at the Maiden Tower
Despite being one of the symbols of the city of Baku, the Maiden Tower’s origins are shrouded in mystery. Of the many legends which surround this ancient edifice only one has a happy ending. The ill-fated maiden who has thrown herself from the tower is rescued by mermaids and reunited with her lover. The many variants of this story have become the subject of poems, plays and even a ballet.
Historians have speculated that the tower may in fact have been built originally as a Zoroastrian temple. The tower may have been a place for the dead to be consumed by birds, an observatory or even a place for fire worship. Earliest estimates date the temple to about the year 6 BC.
