In 2014, Krasnaya Polyana was put on the world map along with its nearest Russian city, Sochi. The settlement was first recorded in historic journals as far back as 1835, when a Russian spy was sent in disguise as a Circassian mountaineer to record his observations. It wasn’t until many years later that people began to settle here. Today, it is Russia’s most famous and bustling mountain resort. It is the ideal place to immerse yourself in mountains, glaciers, meadows, rivers and lakes that surround it. Krasnaya Polyana (500m) is nestled at the foot of the main Causasian ridge, surrounded by impressive mountains summits reaching 3000m.
Rosa Khutor Mountain Resort
The main resort in Krasnaya Polyana is Rosa Khutor. It has the full amenities you would expect of any high-class alpine resort, including equipment hire, shops, restaurants and bars, after ski, spa facilities and much more. After redevelopment, the resort now has world-class infrastructure, putting it on a scale that can compete with many of Europe’s great alpine regions. In fact, locally, Krasnaya Polyana is known as the ‘Russian Switzerland’.
A Four-Season Destination
Krasnaya Polyana is a year-round hive of activity. The busiest time is during the winter season, but if you prefer to make use of the mountains in more temperate conditions then spring and autumn are ideal. Take advantage of warmer skiing conditions and more daylight in the spring, or perfect hiking conditions and stunning colours during the autumn months.
Winters here tend to be sunny and snowy, the perfect combination for any ski holiday. Although night time temperatures often drop below zero, the average daytime temperatures are between zero and +5oC, with snow cover expected from November to the beginning of June. Ski lifts and gondolas run from the village to the highest summit lift, situated at 2,320m.
During summer, the area also has a good climate where temperatures can rise to between 25-30oC, ideal for walking or biking the endless number of hiking trails available. This incredible mountain range offers breath-taking views of the sharp ridges and peaks of the Western Caucasus Mountains.
The Perfect Day Trip
Krasnaya Polyana is well-worth the day trip from Sochi and the Park Inn by Radisson Sochi City Centre
. The mountains are located 70km away but are easily accessible by train, bus or car. To make your day as convenient as possible there are full equipment hire services available in Rosa Khutor, so your hardest decision to make is what activity to do?
