Royal Opera House
Being the first opera house built in the Gulf, the Royal Opera House
is Oman's premier musical arts and culture venue. The opera house offers world-class performances by Arabic musicians and dancers, as well as renowned performers from across the globe. Spend an evening here watching a show or visit the grounds to see the building’s magnificent architecture.
A night of music
Commissioned by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said and opened in 2011, the Royal Opera House Muscat seeks to celebrate culturally diverse artistic expression. Its inaugural season hosted high-profile performances by the likes of Placido Domingo, Renee Fleming, Yo-yo Ma and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Future seasons will include performances of Omani art, as well as collaborations with Arab, Indian, Asian, African and Western artists.
When attending a performance, you won’t need to worry about the language barrier. Each seat has its own screen for translating, meaning won’t miss a thing.
With its striking combination of Islamic and Italianate architecture, the new opera house complex is also well worth visiting for appearances alone. The building is especially beautiful at night when its walls are illuminated, giving it a majestic feel. Beyond exceptional performances and wonderful design, you can also enjoy the formal landscaped gardens, cultural market, luxury shops and restaurants, as well as the art centre for musical, theatrical and operatic performance.
If you are lucky enough to visit when there are no performances or rehearsals, then you can join a quick tour through the building with a guide. Tours are normally available from 08:30-10:00.
