Discover more about Leuven’s Benedictine Abbey
Established by monks from the Order of Benedict in 1888, Keizerberg Abbey was initially a Benedictine house of studies. Constructed on the hill on which Leuven’s former castle was located, it was officially founded as an abbey in 1899, and became part of the Beuron Congregation – a collection of Benedictine monasteries. Later it became part of the Belgian Mission Congregation of Our Lady and finally part of the Subiaco Congregation.
The abbey suffered damage both in 1914 and during World War II and has been extensively renovated. It still functions as an abbey today, but also includes student accommodation. Visitors to the abbey will enjoy admiring its stunning architecture and learning more about its history.
