Jalil Opera and Ballet Theatre
Kazan is home to one of the largest centres of Tatar national music, The Jalil Opera and Ballet Theatre, named after Musa Jalil, a Tatar poet and resistance fighter.
Each year, two festivals are held at the Jalil Kazan: the R.Nouriyev International Festival of Classical Ballet and the F.Shalyapin International Festival of Opera, allowing an international audience to experience Tatar music and culture and to bring together a varied line-up of performances from around the world.

The Jalil Theatre in Kazan was originally established in 1803 as a small, temporary wooden theatre showing mainly dramatic productions, until 1851 when a permanent building was put in place and opened with a tour program from the Italian Opera Company. The modern theatre was established in 1938 and has developed its impressive Drama and Opera offering, today considered to be home to one of the best opera and ballet companies in Russia, regularly touring cities across Europe.
