A must-see, Grand Place is the most famous destination in Brussels. Grand Place is the main square in the heart of Brussels. The beauty and history of the buildings around Grand Place has landed it a position on the UNESCO World Heritage List. There are several buildings of interest located on Grand Place including Brussels Town Hall. This gothic building reaches up to 96 metres at the top of the spire. It was built in various stages throughout the 1400’s. Another landmark building is the Maison du Roi. Also known as the King’s House or Bread House (Broodhuis), it was built in the 19th century, and functions today as the Museum of the City.
In addition, there are also chocolate shops, restaurants and pubs. The best way to take in the striking Baroque buildings of Grand Place is to find a spot, order refreshments, perhaps one of Belgium’s many local beers, and sit and watch the world go by.
Events at Grand Place
Christmas is a special time on Grand Place and is not to be missed. The Christmas tree dominates the centre of the square, accompanied by a sound and light show in the evenings. In neighbouring streets, you will find magical Brussels Christmas Markets
selling food, refreshments and handicrafts.
Grand Place is also host to a regular flower market. Every second year, Grand Place is transformed into a giant ‘Flower Carpet’ with a magical display of colour.
