Find out more about Devin Castle in Bratislava
Devin Castle has been at the centre of numerous crucial periods in Slovakian history. A number of historical wars were played out from the castle, which was expanded in the 13th century to protect the western frontier of the Hungarian Kingdom. The castle then became occupied by a number of kings, resulting in a palace being added in the 15th century.
Reinforcements were built around Devin castle during wars against the Ottoman Empire, and the stone structure survived intact until 1809, when it was blown up during the Napoleonic wars. The ruins have been an important national symbol for the Slovakian people since the 19th century, with a partial reconstruction and addition of a museum added during the 20th century.
