A passport or an original birth certificate is required to cross the Canadian border. If you do not have your original birth certificate, you could be detained for up to 4 hours while they confirm your birth place. Indications are that EVERY car is being searched. While someone searches your car, you will be asked to stand nearby, but far enough away from the car itself. Cleaning the inside of your car beforehand is recommended, it will reduce the amount of time you are detained at the border.
