FC Zenit Saint Petersburg
Arguably the best football team in Russia, in competition with rival teams from Moscow, FC Zenit are the local team to St. Petersburg. As one of the most titled clubs in the country they play in the Russian Premier League and have taken the title home at the end of the 2003, 2007, 2010 and 2011-2012 seasons. It is not only in the domestic league this team excels. Zenit Saint Petersburg have also has international success winning the UEFA Cup in 2007/08, their first European trophy, and the UEFA Super Cup in 2008. They regularly qualify for the UEFA championship and have made a name for themselves in Europe.
The Old and New Petrovsky Stadium
Petrovsky Stadium is home to Zenit Football Club and that is largely why it is known. However, it is not just a football stadium but a sporting complex located in St. Petersburg. The stadium is actually quite old by modern standards, built in 1925. Over the years it has undergone substantial reconstruction and expansion and today has a capacity of over 20,000. Currently, a new stadium is under construction, due to the success of Zenit Football Club. The expansion will increase the capacity to 69,000, more than tripling its size. The current venue is also used for several sporting events and also functions as an entertainment arena for concerts and festivals.
